Lt
Watada, I left the Navy Reserves a while ago, due to my opposition to waging an
illegal and unjust war in Iraq.
I left in opposition of a war that I believe is counter to the best interests
of the UnitedState,
the US
constitution, and an affront to the honor of my country, of the Navy I loved,
and of myself as a fervent patriot. You are a true man of honor and
patriot to your country. Keep fighting the good fight. I stand with
you, sir. Good luck and God speed.

Cindy Sheehan, Gold Star Mother |
July 6, 2006 - I don't know Lt. Ehren Watada, but I know his mother and spoke at length with her back in May in Hawaii about how Ehren morally did not want to go to Iraq and how he was being harassed by other members of his unit for his beliefs that the war in Iraq was wrong and that he didn't want to kill innocent people for BushCo.

Our generation is confronted with military recruiters in our
schools and communities, urging us to sacrifice - and possibly die - to
carry out an illegal war most of us don't support. Students and young
people stand in solidarity with Lt Watada's courage in refusing to be
party to war crimes.

All Americans should respect the decision of Army Lt. Ehren Watada to refuse orders and face court martial for his opposition to the Iraq War. The power of conscience should never be stifled by a state without one.

Statement On Behalf Of Lt. Ehren Watada One generation ago the peoples of the world asked themselves: Where were the “good” Germans? Well, there were some good Germans. The Lutheran theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the foremost exemplar of someone who led a life of principled opposition to the Nazi-terror state even unto death. |

That Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada is standing up for the oath he took is a soldier to defend his country and its constitution against enemies, both foreign and domestic, is a lesson for everyone serving in the U.S. military. Watada knows that Iraqis are not a threat to the security of the United States.

My sister was one of those murdered on 9/11 and this war has never been fought in my name or those of my sister's family. President Bush's response to that tragedy is an even greater tragedy that has caused enormous suffering for our own troops, their families, and the thousands and thousands of innocent Iraqi women, children and men caught in the crossfire. I am grateful that you are declaring this obscenity to be what it is and, as a representative of the military, are refusing to participate in perpetuating its pain and death. Your courage is admirable. You most certainly are an American! |
