Conscientious Objector Statement of Support"As an ex Military member, I say military rather than service because today our government is using the military to do a disservice to humanity, Anyhow, as an ex-enlisted member of the military, I know what leaders in the military are encouraged to do and the ways in which their obedience and conformity is cultivated by the daily proceedings of military life. It is no exaggeration to say that it is quite difficult to move up in rank and remain honest. Honesty and doing the right thing are OK when they don't interfere with the plans of the top brass. But when these paths diverge Officers who value their careers acquiesce. However Officers who value human life, the rule of law and the importance of being true to your conscience do as LT. Watada has done. Lt. Watada stands almost alone in that his leadership and courage are unquestionable. I wish that the chain of command I belonged to would have furnished me with such leadership. In such a case, I would have gladly followed orders to resist this butchery in Iraq. I join in the chorus of saying Thank You to Lt. Watada and I thank his brave family for taking on this campaigning in his support and in support of the Iraqi and Afghan people suffering under the boot of occupation. I wish Ehren the best of luck and I know no matter how things play out the freedom of conscience that he has empowered himself and others by example is something no Court Martial has the power to take away. --Pablo Paredes Conscientious Objector |
