"If the definition of a patriot is one who loves and defends his country then Ehren Watada is truly a patriot for his refusal to serve in a war that is harming the people of Iraq and increasing the threat of harm to Americans as evidenced by a Pentagon paper report stating that American military intervention in Iraq has actually increased the threat of terrorism by uniting fundamentalists who perceive our presence there as a threat not only to their lives but to their culture and way of life. If the definition of a hero is one who is distinguished by exceptional courage then Lieutenant Ehren Watada is a hero as he knowingly and freely faces courtmartial and conviction and the likely possibility of imprisonment, hard labor, and harassment.
