Hawaii Public Radio hosts dedicate weekly song

HONOLULU - Although their 11-year old radio program is devoted to traditional Hawaiian music, local producers/co-hosts Keith & Carmen Haugen feature a recording of Keith's 1988 "Cease Fire" song in a medley with Bobby Darin's 1968 hit, "Simple Song of Freedom" (MP3) in every show. And, every Sunday, they dedicate the song to U.S. Army Lt. Ehren Watada, who refused to go to Iraq with his unit.  Watada said he believes that Iraq war is illegal.

"We're hoping that listeners will get the message and tell their elected and appointed government officials," Keith said. "We're going to play that song every Sunday until our so-called leaders come to their senses.

"We're proud of Ehren for standing up to the Bush gang and refusing to kill or be killed for Bush in the illegal Iraq war."  Haugen, a U.S. Army veteran, often sings the medley at anti-war and peace rallies, in concerts, and even at a Honolulu sign-waving to show support for Ehren.  He also sings his "Song of Peace" and standards like "Study War No More," popularized by Pete Seeger.

Haugen said the response to airing the medley on their Sunday radio
program has been very positive.  "We've had listeners call us and email us to say thanks for taking a stance and for playing the songs," he said.  "One local doctor emailed to say that he called his son to listen to the song too.

"It's pretty much what we expected, since a huge majority of Americans oppose the Bush/Chalabi Iraq War, and how things are being handled by Bush.  One-party rule is destroying our country.

"I'm very proud to remind people that our two U.S. Senators were not sucked in by the Administration's lies, and voted against letting Bush start that war.  More recently, both Senators Inouye and Akaka also represented their constituents well by voting against a war without end."

Their program, "The Music of Hawai`i," airs at 3 p.m. every Sunday on KIPO, 89.3 FM, one of the Hawai`i Public Radio frequencies.  It can also be heard world wide at www.hawaiipublicradio.org

Keith wrote "Cease Fire" in 1987-88, when Iraq and Iran were at war and the US was supplying weapons, including gas, to both sides.  President Reagan was supplying Iraq openly and, his administration was supplying Iran illegally in what was later disclosed in the Iran-Contra Scandal.  Reagan, Vice President George H.W. Bush, Defense Secretary Casper Weinberg, and US Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North all gained notoriety for lying to the U.S. Congress in that investigation.

Darin wrote his "Song of Freedom" in 1968, during the Vietnam War. It's key line says "We the people here don't want a war."

Here are the words to the medley of the Haugen and Darin songs:

"Cease Fire" / "Song of Freedom"
(Keith Haugen/Bobby Darin)

Not far from where the Christ Child lay, men are killing men today
While we talk of peace on earth, goodwill to men
Bombs and rockets light the sky, where angels once sang on high
And we supply the weapons that spell their bloody end.
If you listen, you can still hear the angels,
It matters not where you may be
You might even hear God's own voice commanding:
"Cease fire!  Let My people be."

Somewhere on this blessed earth,
There's been trouble since before his birth
Men cried out, but we ignored their plea
Now while they're fighting over there,
We raise our voice in common prayer,
For an end to war, for everlasting peace.
If you listen, you can still hear the angels,
It matters not where you may be,
You might even hear God's own voice commanding:
"Cease fire! Set My people free."

So listen, leaders of every land,
It's time to stop and take a stand
Peace and love are gifts that you should give
If dreams of peace should now come true
The world will send its thanks to you
Cease Fire! Let all God's children live.

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air, tell the people everywhere
That we the people here don't want a war.

Now, no doubt some folks enjoy doing battle,
Like Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Kings
So let's all build them shelves,
Where they can fight among themselves,
And leave the people be who love to sing.

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
Let it fill the air, tell the people everywhere
That we the people here don't want a war.

If you listen, you can still hear the angels,
It matters not where you may be
You might even hear God's own voice commanding:
"Cease fire!  Come celebrate with Me."
